View of a watermill near Dolgelly or Dolgellau in North Wales. Dolgellau is situated at the foot of the Cader Idris mountain range. The woollen industry was an essential part of the local economy because well placed watermills could take full advantage of the flow of the rivers Arran and Wnion. The woollen industry reached its peak in 1800 but from this time declined because the mills powered by water were unable to compete with the newly introduced mechanical mills.
