‘Ichnography’ originally meant the tracing out of a section or ground plan of a building but, by the 18th century, it was used in the wider sense of a plan or map of an area. This plan was published by T Osborne and appears in Phillip Morant’s ‘The History and Antiquities of the County of Essex’, 1768.
