An engraving of the city of Cambridge by Samuel and Nathaniel Buck, accompanying by an explanatory note and key. Daniel Defoe, who visited the town in the early 18th century, noted that the town and university 'are blended together in the situation, and colleges, halls, and house for literature are promiscuously scatter'd up and down'. However despite them being so intermixed, the town and university had separate representation and government.
