A view of the hamlet of Matlock Bath in Derbyshire. It included in a group of hamlets which have the name Matlock. Matlock Bath, a spa developed separately from the original village of Matlock Bank. It lies in a narrow gorge with the road, river and settlement crammed along the bottom the steep sided Matlock Dale. By the late 18th century Matlock Bath had become more popular as a health resort, especially as a new stone bath house had been established. John Byng, Viscount Torrington visited Matlock in 1790 and complained 'The quiet and society of the place is lost'.
