View of Berry Pomery Castle

View of Berry Pomeroy Castle in Devon. It is located apart from the villlage of Berry Pomeroy in a picturesque spot half way up a wooded hill side which overlooks a deep ravine and river. The de Pomeropy family lived here from the Norman Conquest until 1547. Most of the castle however dates from the later middle ages. The gunports within the defences suggest they were built around the late 14th century. The castle was altered by Edward Seymour Duke of Somerset in the mid 16th century, but by 1701 John Prince, a local vicar recorded it was an abandoned ruin.
