This area is protected by the peaks of the Downs and has a notably milder climate than much of the rest of the island and is known fro the numerous plants and flowers that grow in this balmy environment making it very picturesque. Walmsley (1763- 1806 was an accomplished landscape artist who began his career as a scene painter at the Opera House in London. He is known for his dramatic use of colour and theatrical arrangement of his scenes.
