View of Goodrich castle in Herefordshire. The castle was built in the 12th century on the site of an earlier fortification. It was built from red sandstone and consisted of a small keep protected by strong curtain walls. By the 13th century the castle has passed to the de Valence family and they substantially restructured the castle, creating a square inner bailey, building towers one each corner and by adding a large gatehouse. The castle is well defended by a naturally steep slope and a moat cut from the rock on which the castle stands.
