View of Wilton Castle at Bridshaw in Ross on Wye, Herefordshire. The castle dates from the 13th century. The original castle here would have been of motte and bailey design but the 13th century castle was built from a distinctive red sandstone. By the 14th century the castle had been converted into a fortified residence and in the 16th century a large mansion house was built in its grounds. A century later the castle and house were owned by Sir John Brydges. He angered royalists by remaining neutral during the Civil War and as a punishment the castle was burnt to the ground.
