Malling Abbey was founded by Gundulf Bishop of Rochester in 1060. This Benedictine nunnery was richly endowed, although its original buildings were destroyed in a disastrous fire in 1180. The abbey was dissolved in 1538, and the medieval buildings consequently fell into ruin. By the mid 18th century the abbey and its grounds were made into a country seat for a local gentleman. An 18th century mansion was built nearby - using stones and windows from the abbey to give a Gothic appearance
