Margate became a resort for the nobility in the 18th century. Fashionable people came to follow the new trend for sea-bathing as a health restorative. Typically, these tourists lived in house built inland from the parade. Margate Pier was rebuilt in 1789 but later damaged by a storm, while the harbour was not really developed until the works managed by John Rennie began in 1810.
