View of Queens Square in Bloomsbury in London. This is one of the smaller, less well known London squares which is located east of Russell Square, the other side of Southampton Row. In the 17th and 18th century, many aristocratic families who held land near London, sought to develop their estates by building houses on them, (or by leasing plots of land to builders or individuals to build on). They copied the open squares found in other European cities. These squares became fashionable suburbs for wealthy families who wanted to escape the noise and overcrowding of the City of London.
