View of Holy Cross church, formerly part of the Benedictine Abbey of St Peter and St Paul. The abbey attracted many pilgrims because of its shrine to St Winefride, and as a result became very wealthy. After it was dissolved in the 16th century, the nave of the abbey continued to be used as a parish church, while the chancel was demolished. Many of the monastic buildings remained well into the 18th century but they were demolished in 1830s to make way for a new road to Holyhead.
