View of the abbot's kitchen, Glastonbury, Somersetshire
Glastonbury Abbey was one of the richest and most impressive English medieval abbeys. The building pictured remains perhaps the best-preserved medieval kitchen in Europe, and probably dates from the late 14th century. The interior is a square room, with a fireplace set in to each of the four corners, hence the building's octagonal exterior. The eight-sided pyramidal roof is topped with a lantern structure.
