Conway Castle in Wales was built between 1283 and 1293. The design of the castle was dictated by the narrow outcrop on which it was built- in a rectangular formation, eight large round towers were linked buy a high and extremely thick curtain wall. There was no keep and no gatehouse, instead there were open lower barbicans at the western and eastern ends and a cross wall divided the internal space into 2 independent wards. When built the castle would have been completely covered in a white render and would have been a magnificent sight.
