Medium: Aquatint, coloured
View of Penrhyn Castle and Penmaen Mawr Mountain. The castle or mansion house was built between 1827 and 1837 and is situated in magnificent surroundings between the Menai Strait and Mount Snowdonia. The house was built by Thomas Hopper for George Dawkins Pennant who had accumulated great wealth through owning slate mines in Wales and sugar plantations in Jamaica. The house is modelled on the Norman keep at Rochester Castle and has a very opulent interior which was designed to demonstrate the wealth of the family.
