View of Montrose on the east coast Scotland. The original town of Montrose developed 2 miles west of where the town stands today but this was destroyed by Viking raids in the late 10th century. A new town developed in the 13th century, around a natural harbour and the mouths of the South Esk and North Esk rivers. It became a thriving trading port with safe anchorage. It was not until the 18th century that a bridge across the River South Esk was built to encourage trade.
