View of Muckross Abbey in Killarney, Ireland. The Abbey was founded by Donal MacCarthy in 1448 for the Observantine Franciscans however an Abbey founded by Saint Fionan had stood on the same spot in the 6th century but which was destroyed by fire in the 12th century. Although building work began in 1448 the Abbey was not finished for fifty years and changes in building style can be seen, particularly in the cloisters. A yew tree stands in the centre of the abbey and is said to be older than the building, superstition says it is mad luck to cut the tree so it still stands today.
