View from Fort Needham by George Isham Parkyns (1749-1820). Halifax was a settlement founded by the British in 1749. It had a well protected harbour which made it ideal to keep out invaders. Fort Needham was one of the buildings protecting the harbour and was built in 1778 under the direction of Captain William Spry. Halifax was such a valuable port that it became the most heavily fortified site in Canada. The artist, Parkyns was a well known watercolour painter originally from Nottingham. He was an officer in the Nottingham Militia during the American War of Independence.
