A picture of the island of Saint Eustatius by the artist Charles Forrest. Saint Eustatius (now part of the Netherlands Antilles) was settled by the Dutch in 1632 and became an important trading centre – particularly of contraband trade with the American colonies at the time of the American Revolution. The island changed governments many times during the 18th century, with Dutch, English, Spanish and French powers all eager to take control of it.
