View of the ruins of Wigmore Castle in Herefordshire. The castle was built in the 11th century by William Fitzosburn. The castle which stands near the boundary between England and Wales, was well located, situated on a ridge, surrounded by natural marshland and forest, and defended by deep ditches and moats. The castle was home to the Mortimer family and until the Civil war it was well used however its defences were not modernised in the 17th century and from this time it fell to ruin.
