West View of Niedpath Castle

View of Neidpath Castle in Scotland. The castle, situated on a ridge above the River Tweed, was built in the 14th century for Sir William de Heya, Sheriff of Peebles. It was built on the site of an earlier 12th century castle which had belonged to Sir Simon Fraser. The stone castle was originally a simple L shaped keep with walls over 10 feet thick in places to withstand bombardment during an attack. During the 17th century Neidpath Castle was converted to a tower house and mansion by the Douglas family. An upper storey had already been built and to this was added a staircase and a lower basement storey.
