Artist: Grose, Francis
Medium: Ink on paper
A view of the George Inn at Yarmouth in the Isle of Wight by Francis Grose. This 17th century house still stands today on the Quayside as the George Hotel. Francis Grose (1731-1791) was an English Antiquary and a retired captain of the British Army. He travelled through the British Isles compiling books on the countries’ antiquities and became known for his ‘The Antiquities of England and Wales’ which was published in 1772-76 in which he included many views. This picture of the George Inn is probably a preparatory drawing for this book.
