Map view of Canterbury, showing the Cathedral, from William Smith's "Particular Description of England", 1588
This view of the Canterbury comes from William Smith’s "The particular description of England, with the portraitures of certaine of the cheiffest citties and townes" of 1588. By then the population of the city had been swollen by the influx of many Protestant weavers fleeing religious persecution in France and what is now Belgium.
