After the defeat of Germany following the 1939-45 War the country was divided into four Zones of Occupation.
All designs and colours for postage stamps were subject to approval by the four occupying military powers (American, British, French and Soviet). The signatures of army officers from the four powers indicated such approval.
Some of the stamps exhibited are in colours or designs which were not issued. The proofs and essays shown here are from the British set, being one of only four that can exist.
