Orange Free State: 1878 5/- , the printing plate.
Printer: De La Rue & Co.
Medium: Printing plate
The first series of postage stamps for the Orange Free State were issued between 1868 and 1878. Thomas De La Rue & Co of London were asked to produce the stamps.
De La Rue made a master die, which was then used to make an individual die for each of the values in the series. These dies were used to make the printing plates, each of which would print 240 impressions.
Shown is the copper printing plate for the 5/- value.
