Experiment
Photographers: Guillaume Duchenne de Boulogne and Adrien Tournachon
'An electro-physiological experiment, c.1854'
The physiologist Guillaume Duchenne de Boulogne is portrayed here in the course of one of his experiments with patients at the Salpêtrière Hospital in Paris.
Duchenne used the application of electricity to stimulate muscle groups illustrating how emotions such as joy, anger or despair were given classifiable physical expression.
His work was recorded through collaboration with the professional photographer Adrien Tournachon, brother of the more famous photographer 'Nadar'.
