Village near Yokohama
Photographer: Wilhelm Burger (1844 - 1920)
'Village near Yokohama, c.1869'
As well as the sale of views of far-off places for the European market, photography was increasingly used as a means of gathering information for official purposes.
In 1868, the Austrian government attached an official photographer to the mission despatched to the Far East with the purpose of initiating diplomatic and commercial relations with Siam, China and Japan. In the course of the mission, the Viennese photographer Wilhelm Burger took an outstanding series of views, including landscapes, portraits, and the documentation of works of art.
