The 11th-century Benedictine monastery of St Peter was shut down in 1539 by King Henry VIII when he set sbout establishing the Church of England by dissolving the monasteries. By the time Grimm made these drawings of Abbotsbury many of the monastic buildings had fallen into disrepair.
