Abbotsbury, St Catherine's Hill and Chapel
Artist: Grimm, Samuel Hieronymus
Medium: Ink on paper
The 14th-century chapel of St Catherine looks out over the village of Abbotsbury. The monks of the nearby Abbey built it high on the hill as a beacon to assist pilgrims on their way to the Abbey. Unmarried women from the surrounding villages were said to come and pray here for a husband. St Catherine is patron saint of virgins, philosophers and unwedded women.
