Abbotsbury, toward the sea

Artist: Grimm, Samuel Hieronymus

Medium: Ink wash on paper

Date: 1790

Shelfmark: Additional MS 15537

Item number: f.111

This sketch shows the view looking out to sea from the inn at Abbotsbury. St Catherine's Hill and the chapel can be seen in the distance. Grimm lodged at this inn for several days as he made his illustrations of the surrounding countryside. Notice the nice domestic detail of the woman hanging out the washing.
