A cricket match in Devonshire Street

Artist: Grimm, Samuel Hieronymus
Medium: Ink wash on paper
Date: 1793
Devonshire Street was built in the 1780s, named after the Duke of Devonshire, on the site of the former Marylebone Gardens. Grimm was interested in painting not only grand topographical scenes, but also people in everyday social situations at work and play, as this scene of an impromptu cricket match shows.
