Alnwick was the home of the Percy family, first Earls then Dukes of Northumberland. Alnwick castle was acquired by Henry Percy in 1309 and was enlarged over the centuries. In the 18th century the castle was restored and famous gardener Capability Brown was employed to landscape the grounds, which by this time covered an area of approximately seven acres.
