This storehouse window bears the date 1513, which was the year the Deptford dockyards were founded. This window was boarded up at some point in the 17th century and was only rediscovered by accident by two workmen in 1826. Deptford dockyards were England's largest and most important during the 16th century, but by the 18th century, due to the progressive silting of the Thames, their use was restricted to shipbuilding and distributing wares to other yards and fleets abroad. The yards were shut down between 1830 and 1844, finally closing in 1869.
