Battle Abbey Gateway from The Marketplace

Artist: Grimm, Samuel Hieronymus
Medium: Watercolour
Date: 1773
Battle Abbey was built by William the Conqueror near Hastings to commemorate, as its name suggests, the famous battle between the Saxons and Normans in 1066. A wealthy Benedictine community developed here and it was also the burial place of many illustrious people. This view shows one of the best examples of a monastic gatehouse in England. Built in the 1330s its three stories reached 54 feet high and covered a vast area.
