Because of its panoramic views of the Dorset coast and the English Channel, the Isle of Portland has for centuries served as a stategic defence point against invaders from the sea. Over the past two thousand years numerous forts, castles, lookout points and battlements have been erected on the isle. Some have long ago vanished or fallen into disrepair, whilst others stand as testimony to Portland's role as the south coast defender of mainland Britain.
