This is a north-west view in ink of the Church of St John the Evangelist in Merrington, which is three miles from Bishop Auckland in Durham. This had been the site of a church since the Norman era, and the building's architecture reflected this. It has a nave, long low-roofed chancel, north transept and a massive square tower, some 72 feet high, at the transept's intersection. It was entirely rebuilt in 1851 in much the same style.
