Beverston Castle was built in the mid-13th century by the Berkeley family, who earlier had changed their name from Fitzharding. Robert Fitzharding founded St Augustine's Abbey, later to become Bristol Cathedral, in the previous century.

During the English Civil War (1642-1646), the castle was a Royalist stonghold. It was besieged three times before Parliamentarian forces eventually captured and laid waste to it.
