Daniel Defoe, who visited Blenheim Palace in 1720, noted, "it is still a most charming situation, and 'tis still disputable after all that has been laid out, whether the country round gives more lustre to the building, or the building to the country". He also reported of "gardens of 100 acres of ground" and huge offices and outbuildings on the estate. The grounds at Blenheim were changed considerably during the period 1764-74 when Capability Brown was employed here, particularly the landscaping of the gardens to create a lake.
