Hardwick Hall was built for Bess of Hardwick by Queen Elizabeth I. Bess was one of the most influential members of Elizabeth's court. She became the wealthiest and most powerful woman in Britain after the Queen died. Hardwick Hall is a fine example of Elizabethan architecture and in keeping with the status of its owner was furnished to a most luxurious standard.
