The Church of St Mary dates back to c.1300, but the tower was added in the late 15th century. The village of Cerne Abbas is known chiefly for the 180ft figure etched into the chalk on Giant's Hilll. A depiction of the giant wielding his club appears on the front of the church, together with other pagan-like figures, suggesting that older religions still had a influence after Christianity had been established in the area.
