Corfe Castle and town
Artist: Grimm, Samuel Hieronymus
Medium: Ink wash on paper
The village and castle at Corfe are constructed from the local Purbeck stone, even the village cottages have stone roofs - quite an unusual feature for rural domestic dwellings. When the stone trade moved from Corfe to Swanage in the late 18th century, the village experienced a financial decline and all building work ceased. As a result the village today retains a uniform style endowing it with an "olde worlde" charm.
