The early-medieval Church of St Brandon in Branspeth, Durham was largely destroyed by fire in 1998. Some of the stone and metalwork was salvageable, but most of the woodwork was destroyed. The design of the church - and particularly its oaken, crossbeamed roof - was a major influence in the building of Durham cathedral.
