In the distance can be seen the outline of a windmill on top of a Roman hillfort. It was not until the the 1790s that Clifton began to grow in size. Until then there had been a scattering of genteel lodging houses to provide accommodation for the holiday trade that passed through Clifton and Hotwells nearby.

The vista seen here is long gone - Clifton is now very much part of the bustling metropolis of Bristol.
