The romantic Gothic-style Cholmondley Castle, near Malpas in Cheshire, was built for the 1st Marquess of Cholmondley in 1801. The family had lived at Cholmondley since 1200 and the castle replaces an earlier manor house. It stands dramatically on a hilltop, high above a lake, surrounded by sweeping lawns and magnificent gardens. When Buckler visited here in 1814, soon after its completion, the Estate was considered one of the most beautiful in England and visitors would come from all over Europe to see it, much as they still do today.
