Sir Richard Edgcumbe was given Cotehele House as a reward for his loyalty at the Battle of Bosworth in 1485 by Henry VII. After Sir Richard's death in 1489, the property passed to his son Piers, who completed the house. This drawing shows a south-east view of the house. Notice how the windows are set up high on the facade and are rather small - the house was built with defence very much a priority. It is not until entering the inner courtyard that the grand large windows, expected in a house of this stature, can be seen.
