Clovelly is mentioned in the Domesday Book as a small fishing hamlet. In the 16th century, George Cary, a wealthy local lawyer, built the small stone harbour. The little coves and secluded inlets dotted around nearby made this stretch of the Devon coast a haven for piracy and smuggling over the centuries.
