During the 17th and 18th centuries the parish workhouse offered employment, food and accommodation to the local destitute population. The word often conjures up a Dickensian image of maltreatment, suffering and deprivation, and although the workhouse did indeed impose a strict rule of order, some of these institutions were deemed pleasant enough to earn the title "Pauper Palace".
