The palace, home to the Bishops of Ely, dates back to the 15th century and makes up part of the very extensive Ely Cathedral compound. The Ely Bishops also had another palace, situated near Holborn in London. The oldest plane tree in England can be found in the palace gardens. It was planted more that 300 years ago by Bishop Gunning.
