St Mary's Church was built at the beginning of the 19th century in the Victorian Gothic style by Earl Grosvenor on the site of an earlier, medieval St Mary's church. Excavations of the original churchyard carried out in 1929 revealed about 20 bodies, dating from about 390 AD and therefore believed to be the earliest Christian burials in Cheshire.
