A church has stood on or near this site since the seventh century. The old minster of St Mary and St Peter was granted cathedral status in 1050 when the first Bishop was installed in Exeter by King Edward the Confessor. In 1270, Bishop Bronescombe began to rebuild the cathedral based on the new Gothic, or Early English style of architecture, as exemplified by Salisbury Cathedral built around this time.
